Minutes of June 6, 2002 2002-2003 School Year

Calendar & Topics:

The meeting on Thursday, June 6, 2002 was the last meeting until the fall. The dates, locations and topics will all be confirmed at the first fall meeting on September 5, 2002. Plan to attend so you don’t miss out being part of the decision makers. The September meeting will be held at 715 Riley Street, Folsom, in the Staff Development Portable next to the GATE office. Driving directions are: Highway 50 East, take Folsom Blvd. off ramp and go left over freeway. After about two miles, take a right on Natoma Street, right on Riley Street, left on Bidwell and left into the parking lot.

Again, our thanks to Dr. Terry Thomas and the staff of the CSUS, Academic Talent Search Program who have been very helpful in providing the room, chairs, and even cold drinks for the past school year.

The Classrooms In Action Summer School sponsored by our organization that took place in Folsom-Cordova went well – hear a detailed report from those involved at the up coming September meeting.

Minutes – June 6002 Meeting was called to order by Chair Jackie Linn with the following present: Ginny Bateman (Folsom-Cordova USD), Lyn Boeckx (Dry Creek JESD), Carol Catinari (Natomas USD), Nancy Craig (Sacto USD), Deb Gilchrist (Buckeye USD), La Dona Hein (CDE), Valerie Himes (San Juan USD), Marsha M. Kilian (CAG Parent Rep & Charter S. D.), Maureen Olsen (CDE), Kathy Patterson (Rocklin USD), Deanne Quinn (Davis USD), Marilyn Roessler (GATE Consultant), Ernst Schneidereit (Sierra HS), Razieh Semnani (FGTDavis), Lynn Taylor (Buckeye USD), Terry Thomas (ATS/ACE Director, CSUS), Jordan White (Galt ESD/CAG Ed. Rep), and Sharon A. Freitas (Secretary for CAG/50 Mile Club).

Minutes of May, 2002 meeting: M. Olsen (CDE) stated that a correction was needed as there is "no financial support for readers of applications" despite what was printed in the CAG Intercom. It was moved by K. Patterson to approve the minutes as corrected, seconded by T.Thomas, approved.

Treasurer's Report: No report as the Treasurer was not present..

CDE: L. Hein reported that the State budget will not be available for sometime and no one knows what funds will be available to support the GATE team and their office. 170 CDE jobs are currently vacant and more contracts not being renewed including that of the second visiting educator M. Olsen. She will return to her prior school district. J. Linn passed around the letter she had sent in support of saving the second position at the GATE office that was one of many letters received, however, no impact. CCRs will still be part of the one person’s position.

CAG Reports: CAG Board members (Jordan White, K. Patterson, M. Kilian, Nancy Craig, and Sharon Freitas) reported on the CAG Board meeting held May 31 through June 2, 2002 in Anaheim. It was a very large meeting due to the retiring reps and the newly elected reps all being present. Some changes for the fall include the Teacher of the Year award will know be known as the Distinguished Service award and can be given to any one in the region. No ceremony will be held at the conference so significant funds will be saved. Kathy P. and Nancy C. talked about the process of changing the bylaws and policies that is not yet done. Marsha K. stated that she found the Board members to be a very intelligent and gutsy group of people.

March, 2003 – Santa Clara March 2004 - Anaheim March 2005 – Sacramento

CAG PAC Report: Jackie Linn is a current appointed member of the CAG PAC which is the political arm of the CAG organization. She did not have any new information to report.

Old Business:

a. Summer Institute in Sacramento - Ginny Bateman reported that the first annual Classrooms in Action summer school was full as far as teachers to be trained and almost full as far as students participants went, there is still room in the Parent Seminar. A discussion was held about details of the presentations, the packets to be mailed to those registered, etc.

b SENG Training in Sacramento - S. Freitas reported on the advertised SENG training for Guided Discussion Group Facilitators which she is assisting Dr. Jim Webb to offer on June 20 –21, 2002 at Kennedy High School campus. There has been a request for an interpretator for a deaf psychologist who wishes to attend. The SENG Board is considering this request which has never occurred before.

  1. Non-profit Status - Chair Jackie Linn reported that she had received a form approving non-profit status for our new name of Capitol Region GATE Consortium, Inc. The second step of obtaining a tax ID number will now be acted upon. Everyone congratulated Jackie on her success with the paperwork.

New Business:

  1. 2002-2003 Meeting Location - It has been offered by the Folsom-Cordova USD GATE office to arrange for these first Thursday of the month meetings to be held in their new Staff Development Building located at the district office off of Riley Street. Ginny Bateman will schedule the group in and make arrangements for next year’s meetings. Directions will be sent out with the fall calendar and also put on the website.
  2. Two Evening Meetings Dates & Topics - One date in January, 2003 was discussed with CSUS being the location – more discussion is needed.
  3. Charging fees to cover postage – This was deferred to a later meeting.
  4. ATS PROGRAM - 6,050 students were tested in Northern California and 1,850 have applied, largest group ever! 13 new sections have been added resulting in 113 classes with 52 teachers and 21 TAs. A scholarship fund of $35,500 will be distributed to the most needed individuals by a committee.

Discussion Topic – GATE Standards

Program Assessment - Need to be completed each year by each district.

GATE Budget - No estimate of $$ to be available, the CDE would like any carryover explained within the application content.

Other: Kathy Patterson shared her vision of establishing a GATE lab charter school followed by a discussion of the pros and cons of such a plan. Meeting adjourned at 3:10 pm
