Minutes of April 1, 2004 ( revised)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The next meeting of this professional networking group will be Thursday. May 6.2004 beginning at 1:15 PM at the same location, Folsom-Cordova GATE/Staff Development Center located on the campus of Folsom's Sutter Middle School.

April 1,2004: Meeting was called to order by Nancy Craig. Present were Barb Branch, Nancy Bodenhausen, Susan Macaluso,, Sharon Freitas,, Maureen Olsen, Jordan White, Valeric Himes, Karen McLaughlin, Bev Purcell, Joyce Lude, Jackie Linn, Bev Purcell, Roz Semnani, and John Coakley.__________

MINUTES: Minutes of the Feb. meeting were moved to be approved by S. Freitas. Motion was passed.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Checking account has $13,405.93; the savings has $34.07.

CAG Board: J. White passed around a list of choices for jobs at the 2005 conference. J. White is retiring as Education Representative, and Marsha Killian is retiring as Parent Rep. Nora Ho and Sherry Forkuni are running, respectively. Copies of the governor's GATE budget from S. Frank were given out. Discussed application process for GATE programs. S. Frank is to talk to her superiors about districts with one-year and two-year qualifications and the need to refile. Three-year programs will not be required to apply again this year. The process will be able to be done on-line. in the future; now your same form can be used with the dates being changed. Tech Sat. in Rocklin will be Apr. 24 from 8-4. It's $95 for members and $105 for non-members. Need a minimum of 20 people.

CAG PAC: It will financially support candidates for government office for candidates who support gifted education. We need to make

personal contacts at these fundraisers and make local connections rather than just visit capitol offices. J. White presented J. Linn with pictures from the Distinguished Service Award Luncheon at CAG Conference.

OLD BUSINESS:

a. Classrooms-in-Action update - N. Craig said one can register online at crgate.org. She handed out a 1-page flier with registration on the back. Nancy urged people to think outside the box in getting teachers to attend. We reviewed schedule for the week and went over volunteer assignments to be filled. D. Freitas,Cr GATE webmaster, will post class descriptions on the website if an electronic file is submitted. Discussed need for books in the bookstore to be related to topics discussed each day. It was suggested the evaluation be organized by the day rather than at the end of the week while memories are fresh about each class. Nancy said we need at least 50 teachers to attend to cover costs and would like 75.

b. CAG Conference 2005: We need to look for classrooms for Friday visitations and not wait until September as makes the process to rushed. Will need 5 sites for the morning with lunch there. Schools will receive $100 for coffee and donuts. Lunch costs will be covered by registrations for the classroom visits.

NEW BUSINESS:

a. Develop list of topics for discussion:

1. Need training module for administrators (handouts, PowerPoint)

2. How schools meet social/emotional needs of gifted (share strategies, practical applications)

3. Identification of students

4. What to do with 9th grade GATE chart of continuum.

5. ILP's

6. Program evaluation - how we evaluate effectiveness of GATE programs

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Terry Thomas received a community service award.
